It is our intention that Geography will inspire our pupils with a curiosity and fascination about the world, its people and their place within it. We offer opportunities for children to explore the human and physical features of world to promote their interest and understanding of their own locality as well as diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments.
Our Geography curriculum promotes children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, helping them to have a greater understanding of their place in the world, and their rights and responsibilities to other people and the environment. We encourage the children to ask questions about the world and provide opportunities for them to develop geographical skills and knowledge to be able to answer them. We aim to give our learners strong geographical knowledge, good enquiry skills, the ability to use a range of maps, the skills to collect and analyse data and the ability to communicate information in a variety of ways.
We teach from the National Curriculum in KS1 and KS2 and the Early Years Foundation Stage in Year R . All units of work contain fieldwork elements to give pupils real geography skills and to support engagement with their surroundings to promote greater understanding of their locality and the world around them. Fieldwork gives children the tools they need to become a geographer. We use purposefully progressive sequenced questions/statements for children to consider and explore which both reinforce and build on prior learning.
We have an emphasis on ‘showcasing’ our children’s substantive knowledge by answering the big question or statement using disciplinary knowledge. We give pupils the knowledge, geographical vocabulary and experiences to form their own opinion. They are supported in retaining and building on knowledge by the use of Knowledge Organisers which support pre-teaching, embedding geographical vocabulary and SEND access.
Assessment is based on questioning, verbal discussion and recorded responses. Variation of tasks and resources defined using the All Saints Toolkit and tailored Knowledge Organisers allow access and progress by all. All lessons start with a geography quiz (warm-up) to help retention of knowledge or skills learnt. Reading areas and guided reading books include ‘geography themed stories.’ Feedback and marking of work is guided by the school’s marking policy and children are given time to respond to this feedback to progress their learning. All staff complete end of unit assessments and report to parents at the end of the year.
