All Saints
Church of England
Primary School
We have a duty and responsibility to ensure we are developing and nurturing the spiritual, moral, social and cultural lives of our children at All Saints Church of England Primary School. Here you will find out more about this and how it is woven into the life of the our School.
Spiritual Development at All Saints
“We touch on spirituality when we encounter an experience on life’s journey that causes us to reflect on the deeper things in life, its meaning, and our purpose within it, and as a consequence our lives are transformed.” Jon Westwood
Spirituality is how we understand ourselves and our place in the world; it is a connection to something that is bigger than ourselves. It is about awe and wonder, asking ‘big’ questions and being inspired to look beyond ourselves and serve and care for others and the world around us.
We use the ‘Mirror, Door, Window, and Candle’ (Self/Others/Beauty and Beyond) moments to support spiritual development at our School:
Mirror Moments
Mirror moments are one way for us all to explore our own spirituality; this one encourages us to consider how we feel about OURSELVES and our place in God’s creation. These sort of activities can lead to all sorts of discussions but part of the aim of this is to help all to understand that they are not alone if they struggle with their own confidence or negative thoughts about themselves from time to time – it is normal. However, we can encourage others to recognise the positives too; also, that Christian’s believe we are all special and unique creations that God values and loves.
Doors Moments
Door moments are one way to explore our own spirituality and how this relates to our relationships with OTHERS. This reflection focuses on serving others as an outworking of our spirituality, understanding our place in creation as part of a community.
Window Moments
Window moments are one way to explore our own spirituality and how this relates to the world around us. The focus for this reflection is to encourage an appreciation and wonder of the world around us and also a reminder that we can use God’s creation to still us and help develop an inner peace. This can be used to reflect on the BEAUTY of the world around us. It can also help us to realise that the world is both ‘awe-full’ but also sadly ‘awful’ at times too, (to be aware of both its ‘Wows’ but also its ‘Ows’).
Candle Moments
Candle moments are one way to explore spiritual concepts that are not tangible – BEYOND what we can see. This reflection helps us to think about God’s Holy Spirit and how His spirit can be evident in our lives and the world around us. To connect with God, offer opportunities for prayer and a time to ask ‘Big Questions.’
