History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Our curriculum is carefully designed to engage and interest children and is sequenced to build on the skills and knowledge children need to be able to achieve this.
The History curriculum at All Saints CE Primary School makes full use of resources within the local area of Winchester and its surroundings, enabling children to develop a deep understanding of the rich history of their locality, as well as help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Children are encouraged to make links and connections between different historical periods.
Our carefully thought out history curriculum follows the aims of the National Curriculum and sets out to:
History is taught in units throughout the year and follows the Hampshire ‘Six Step Enquiry Approach’ in order that children achieve depth in their learning. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills of each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression across units throughout each year group across the school. By the end of year 6, children will have a chronological understanding of British history from the Stone Age to the present day. They will use an enquiry based approach to draw comparisons and make connections between different time periods and their own lives.. The Early Years Foundation Stage is followed for children in Year R.
Work from each unit is recorded in children’s History books and this evidences a broad and balanced History curriculum, and demonstrates the children’s acquisition of identified key enquiry skills and knowledge. A knowledge organiser supports the key knowledge and understanding children will require by the end of the unit. Our All Saints Toolkit ensures learning is planned for all pupils, including those with additional needs, in order that each child can participate and progress. Emphasis is placed on historical enquiry skills and knowledge. Summative assessments are carried out at the end of each unit, which is then used to build on next steps and teaching points for subsequent units. We work hard to ensure knowledge is retained and built upon over time, enabling children to make sense of historical timelines.
