Year 1 Courageous Advocate Project – Marcus Rashford
Supporting Our Local Food Bank
As part of our Courageous Advocacy project, Year 1 learnt about Marcus Rashford and how he helped families during COVID by raising awareness of food poverty and campaigning for children to have access to meals. This helped the children understand the important role food banks play in supporting people in their local community.
The children began by learning about what it means to be a good citizen and how they can make a positive difference to others. Inspired by Marcus Rashford, they discussed qualities such as kindness, helpfulness and caring for others. They created ‘Good Citizen’ stickers, which were given to children who showed these qualities in school. This encouraged the children to recognise acts of kindness and to be positive role models.
To build on their learning, the children set up food bank role-play areas during Discovery Time and designed posters to encourage people to support food banks. They then created leaflets to promote a food collection for our local food bank. These were shared around the school and local community, with the children delivering them through letterboxes to raise awareness and encourage donations.
The children helped collect the donated food before it was delivered to the food bank. Through this experience, they saw how their actions could help other people. During reflection time, they spoke about feeling happy and proud to have supported their community. They recognised that by delivering leaflets, raising awareness and collecting donations, they had made a difference.
This project helped the children develop empathy, compassion and a sense of responsibility towards others.
