Tiger Class Courageous Advocacy
Our courageous advocate is Harriet Tubman, a significant historical woman who fought against social injustice and tirelessly worked to help God’s chidlren. She was instrumental in saving not only herself from slavery, but repeatedly put herself at risk saving others.
As part of our learning journey to develop our understanding of courageous advocacy we have:
- Learnt in detail about Harriet and the impact Harriet Tubman’s work has made on people and society
- Created and performed a rap song about Harriet Tubman with key ideas included
- Studied poetry written by Michael Rosen ‘On the Move’ about migration
- Studied the book ‘The Island’ by Armin Greder and used drama to develop empathy and understanding towards people seeking sanctuary
To deepen our understanding we undertook a project to make an impact on our community focussing on people seeking refuge by:
- Working with the local charity, Winchester City of Sanctuary
- Designing a front cover for their welcome booklet for refugees
- Wrote postcards to put in welcome bags for refugees
- Collected donations of essential provisions (toiletries, umbrellas, notepads, pens etc) from our school community to add to the welcome bags
- Hosting refugee ambassadors and listening to them discuss their lived experiences
- A small group of children attending a refugee conference where they worked with a local sculptor to create scenes that embodied belonging and listened to the author Onjali Rauf talk about the inspiration behind her book ‘The Boy at the Back of the Classroom’ and the work she does with refugee camps in France. To top the day off the children presented to delegates from local charities, industry, higher education establishments and county curriculum advisors
Our next steps:
- Apply to become a School of Sanctuary
- Further develop our work with the local charity to form a lasting relationship
